Takahikare Moana or the Storm Petrel dances across the waves of sparkling Doubtless Bay. Barely touching the water, they create a ballet that is beautiful and enchanting to watch. This small bird personifies the wines made from the grapes grown on the north facing slopes of Paewhenua Island. The vineyard is nestled in Mangonui Harbour, Northland, New Zealand. The wines will dance across your palette with spirit, freshness and a warmth born from the Far North.
We are Kim and Graham Gilkison, owners of Dancing Petrel Vineyard and Winery on Paewhenua Island, sitting in the heart of Mangonui Harbour, Northland.
We fell in love with Paewhenua Island after spending a lot of time in the area and in 2012 bought the original cottage. In 2018 we made it home and at the same time bought the vineyard that surrounded us. We both love wine and are excited to share a taste of Northland with those who visit.
The micro-climate of Paewhenua Island combined with the north facing slopes provides fantastic growing conditions, producing wines we are proud of.
The reviews have been incredibly positive. Michael Cooper has given our Rose, Pinot Gris and Viognier all 4 stars. Our reds came out in March 2020 and are stunning.
Our grapes are hand harvested and the whites are cool fermented. We are a boutique winery with personal care and attention given to all our vines.
